The investigation led to a room that hadn't been used in years. Dust on the terminals. Cables coiled like old rope. Mara ran a finger along the edge of a monitor and came away gray.

"Legacy," Chen said. "Scheduled for decommission. Next quarter."

"Except someone's been using it," Mara said. The logs didn't lie. Access had originated here-or had been made to look like it had. The difference mattered. She wasn't sure they could tell which.

They pulled the drive. The timeline didn't add up. Activity predated the breach by months. Either the attacker had been inside that long, or someone had been very careful to plant a trail.

Old grudges

In the hallway, security handed them a folder. Personnel records. A name: Viktor Semenov. Left the company two years ago. Not on good terms. His access had been revoked. His accounts had been closed.

"So how did he get back in?" Chen said.

"Maybe he didn't," Mara said. "Maybe someone wanted us to think he did."

The folder was thin. Semenov had worked on the very systems that had been breached. He'd known the architecture. He'd known the people. And he'd had reasons to be angry.

They ran the name through every database they had. Semenov had dropped off the map. No recent employment. No social footprint. Just a ghost and a trail that led to a dusty room and a timeline that didn't add up.
